LITTLE ROCK — Eight groups have been awarded grants for projects that will commemorate the Civil War in Arkansas, the state Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission announced today.
The recipients are:
—TeleVision for Arkansas for “From Slavery to an Eagle on His Button,” $2,000 for a documentary film about the formation of African American regiments during the Civil War.
—Five Rivers Historic Preservation Inc., $1,000 for Civil War elements in its Randolph County Founders Day Celebration.
—Clay County, $2,000 for an April 30-May 1 re-enactment of the 1863 fighting at Chalk Bluff on the St. Francis River.
—Arts and Science Center for Southeast Arkansas, $1,700 for Civil War elements in its Theatre Camp.
—Angela VanZandt and the Arkansas Department of Education, $2,000 for “Brother Against Brother, the Arkansas Peace Society, and the Yellar Rag Boys,” a short film about Unionist activity in 1861.
—Little Rock Central High National Historic Site, $2,000 for a teacher in-service workshop titled “Teaching Teachers About the Civil War Era.”
—Crawford County Civil War Sesquicentennial Committee, $1,025 for research and development of public events in 2011 and 2012.
—Glen Schwarz, $2,000 for seasonal Civil War articles to be published in popular periodicals in Central Arkansas.
The commission also announced that the grant program is suspended until further notice because the organization did not receive funding for the 2012-2013 state budget cycle.
